For the past two years, the University of South Carolina Student Government and Student Veterans Association have hosted the USC Veterans Day 5K. Our mission? To support the veterans and service members in our local community.
In our first two years, we raised over $19,000 and saw over 700 Midlands residents participate in the event. We also received incredible support from businesses and media outlets throughout the Midlands who are committed to supporting those who serve.
As we embark on our 3rd year, we are excited to continue to support The Friends of Fisher House, a local veterans’ organization whose mission is to raise the necessary funds to see a Fisher House constructed to serve the over 100,000 veterans who rely on the Dorn VA Medical Center for care.
The Fisher House provides lodging and transportation for the families of veterans when their loved one is receiving overnight or extended stay care at a VA medical facility (www.fisherhousecolumbiasc.org). We are grateful for the overwhelming level of community support from people like you and look forward to
breaking ground soon!
About the USC Veterans Day 5k
Last year, the University of South Carolina Student Government and Student Veterans Association hosted the second annual USC Veterans Day 5K. We set out on a critical mission: to support the veterans and service members in our local community.
And we succeeded! In its second year, the USC Veterans Day 5K saw over 240 runners, including a 91-year-old World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veteran, cross the finish line! We raised over $16,000.00 for the Friends of Fisher House in Columbia.
The 3rd. Annual Veterans Day 5K is a celebration of the 102nd. Anniversary of Veterans Day (formerly known as Armistice Day) and honors our service members and veterans here in Columbia.
Last year, the route featured many monuments and landmarks, both of the University Campus, and of South Carolina’s veterans, including the Horseshoe, the World War memorial, the Russell House, the South Carolina Veterans Memorial by the State House, and more!
This year due to the COVID 19 pandemic the 5k is being held as a virtual event. The 5K is a fundraiser benefiting the Friends of Fisher House Columbia, SC, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose goal is to bring a Fisher House to Columbia to provide lodging for the families of veterans who require overnight or extended stay care at the Dorn VA Medical Center.

Having family nearby greatly benefits patients battling illness or injury.
There are over 100,000 Veterans and active military in the Dorn VA service area in South Carolina – from the Upstate to the Low Country. Due to high hotel room prices in Columbia, sometimes overnight stay options are extremely limited for family members.
A Fisher House is needed.
Friends of Fisher House Columbia is working tirelessly to campaign for donations to welcome guests to their home away from home on the campus of the Dorn VA Medical Center in the heart of the Capital City. We couldn’t have asked for a better location to be a safe haven for families with loved ones being treated at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center.”
Medals and Awards will be given for the following categories
Top School Spirit (1-3, or 1 for each University)
Top Patriotic Outfit
